"They scanned my cat"

Unless you've seen Varsity Blues about 50 times, then that title makes no sense, but if you have, it's pretty funny.  Movie quote time:

- My cat's okay.
- Huh?
- I took your advice.  They scanned my cat, I can play [football]!
- They scanned your cat?  Ohhh, you got a CAT scan!

OK, enough of that, onto the post...

This won't be a part of our normal routine anymore!
Yesterday morning, around 8:00 am, I was getting Brady ready for daycare. I was about to put him on the bathroom counter because he likes to stand there and look in the mirror as he brushes his teeth. Something happened and I lost my balance as I was lifting him and he fell, head first, onto the tile floor. He hit so hard and his head took all the weight of the fall, he didn't have time to catch himself with his arms or anything.

Within 30 seconds, he was vomiting. I called 911 because he was lethargic, not responding to my questions and trying to go to sleep.  The 911 dispatcher stayed on the phone with me until the EMT and paramedics got to our house, about 5 minutes after I called.

The paramedics evalutated him and stayed about 1½ hours.  His vital signs were normal, pupils were normal and he was starting to act like himself again, so they advised me to take him to his regular doctor, instead of going to the hospital.  Before they left, Brady got to check out the fire truck and ambulance.  He was a little shy, but the firemen gave Brady a Junior Fireman badge (sticker) and told him that he could come to the station anytime and check it all out.  They were so nice and I was very thankful for living in a small town at that moment.

So, about 10:00 am, we saw the doctor. He was happy and doing great at the doctor. She evaluated him and her exact words were, he is “perfect”! She also said, “I wouldn’t worry unless he starts vomiting again”. I was relieved at this point and thought it would be best to try to get Brady back on his normal schedule, so I took Brady to daycare.  He was able to eat all of his lunch and take a nap just like normal.

Daycare called me around 2:30 pm and said he was projectile vomiting. I picked him up and called the doctor from the road, she told us to go straight to the ER. I turned on the flashers and got to the ER as fast as I could because Brady was lethargic and vomiting again in the car.

I called Lance at school on the way and he met us at the ER and so did his mom.  They checked Brady in and ordered a CAT scan.  He started drinking some juice while we waited for the results. He seemed to tolerate the juice just fine and the results came back that he did not have a fracture or any bleeding in the brain, and so they diagnosed him with a concussion.

We came home last night with orders to wake him up every 2-3 hours and keep him on a very bland diet. He threw up again after his bath and again was lethargic.  We gave him some tylenol for the headache (we just assumed he must have one, he's not quite old enough to tell us yet) and then he went to sleep.

Lance and I took turns waking him up every 2-3 hours and giving him ginger ale last night and he did pretty good. He woke up in a great mood this morning (I think he enjoyed all of the attention last night) and has been able to hold down his food all day.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the worst part is over. I kept him home today to watch him closely and to love on him and hug him all day. We are supposed to go to Dell Children’s Hospital if he starts showing signs of neurological problems (walking funny, not talking like normal, etc) or if he is showing signs of dehydration.

To say I was scared would be an understatement!  I hold myself totally responsible and feel very guilty.  I know that kids are not supposed to be on an elevated surface, but I guess I thought it was safe since Brady is old enough to not just roll off and I am always standing right there with him.  It was just a missed step (or something!) while I was lifting him up.  He was wiggling around because he didn't want to brush his teeth and so I know that was part of it.  It's one of those things that happened so fast that I really don't know WHAT happened.

The weird thing is that he doesn't have a bruise, bump or even a red mark on his head.

Thank you so much to all of our friends and family for all the prayers yesterday - it means so much to us and it worked!

How scary, Ronni!! I'm so glad he is doing okay! You can't blame yourself! Like Michelle said, accidents just happen! You are great parents because of all you did to make sure he was okay! Love you all, and I will continue to pray for no long-term effects from his concussion!

Wow - this gave me chills - I can only imagine how scared you were but yeah! for handling it like the strong, responsible mommy you are. It isn't your fault, things happen all the time - it could have been from the swing set, or the porch. Kids fall and sometimes they fall hard.

Just give him extra kisses and no more brushing teeth from the counter. :)

Love you guys - hope to see you soon!

What a scary day this was for all of you! So very glad that he is doing better. It's amazing how quickly something like this can happen to anyone with kids! I hope you got some pictures of him checking out the firetruck; Ian is a little jealous that Brady got to see one up close! :)
